Sculpture - 2018

The first project I undertook at the university was a practical project in which our task was to design a cantilever that embodied the theme of reciprocal. We were limited to using a predetermined amount of material making it a challenging brief. The project spanned a 6 week time period in which the structure was to be designed and built, testing our creative and technical ability

The design was shaped by the requirement to use tension as part of the structure. The initial approach used the projecting section to balance the cantilever, generating tension in the outer ring and applying a compressive force to the inner spine. We took this initial concept further to achieve our final sculpture

The solution my group proposed took advantage of the individual strength of each material we were given. A timber and OSB inner ring acting in compression are balanced by a string and canvas outer skin acting in tension. The curved structure embodies the theme as it is balanced through a conflict of the tension and compression, it would not stand if either element was removed.
