Bicycle Museum - 2019 - Docks, Bristol
A bicycle museum in the heart of the Bristol docks, a 20-minute walk away from the central train station. The building sits opposite the Arnolfini, a Bristol Byzantine art gallery which currently dominates the site due to its solid stone construction. The site neighbours a small shop and sits on the edge of the docks, and there is currently a public footpath here. The west side of the site faces a road and the Arnolfini and this is the dominant face of the building making it ideal for an entrance.
With this project being a museum, a goal I set for myself was to highlight the structure. I wanted the building to be expressive, to make it evident how the building was put together, as if it was part of the exhibit.
One of the ways I decided to achieve this was to have an internally exposed framework of glulam beams and steel columns, in addition the building employed vertical timber louvers inspired by the site to both provide solar shading and give the building a monumental appearance which compliments the opposing Arnolfini
